Man, did the products sell! I wrote computer tutorials at my job 40 hours a week and then went home and slaved all night writing descriptions, packing boxes and shipping out orders. I was stashing cash away by the thousands each week!
Then with $25,000 in the bank, I decided it was time to take the plunge. "Forget the job!" I thought. "The sales are flying in! The product supply is endless! The only thing I don't have is enough time to focus on my business. I can't afford NOT to quit my job!"
For the first six months out on my own, the sales continued to roll in, and the products were still easier to find than a sermon on Sunday. My commute was all of 20 seconds from my bedroom to my living room. For the first time since I was 10-years-old, I felt like I had no stress in my life. Good, good times.
But then things started slipping, and I began to think that maybe I should have attended more of those sermons on Sunday. The once rolling sales slowly trickled off. What was once a very lucrative market with little competition was now crowding up faster than I-95 at rush hour. New competitors were popping up everyday, and as quickly as the competition trended upward, the prices plummeted just as fast. The law of supply and demand is a cruel, cruel beast.
To make matters worse, my sources were quickly drying up. AHHH!!!! It was a triple whammy!
It was now mid-2002, and the dotcom busts and their equipment liquidations were slowing to a halt. I had been purchasing much of my musical merchandise dirt cheap through private eBay sellers, allowing me to turn it around for a nice profit. But with the injection of new competition, many with the same ideas, getting those great deals was getting much more difficult, and my profit margin was shriveling faster than a Shrinky Dink.
